Privacy Policy

tl;dr – the only information collected and stored is what is necessary for site functions, including spam prevention. Registration and archive submission is voluntary and not required to use the website. I will never intentionally sell your information to anyone.

Who we are

Our website address is: https://yearofthetape.com. The Year of the Tape website is managed by one person, Zach (aka Gaz). If there are any questions or concerns with this privacy policy or you need to get in contact with me for another reason, you can use one of the options on my Contact page.

Comments & Reviews

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. When you submit a review on the site, we collect and store the data submitted in the review form, including your email address, but this does not include your IP address.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment/review, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment/review.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website. An effort will be made to strip images of any metadata before they are uploaded to posts. It is possible some images may be missed, so it is your responsibility to ensure this data is removed prior to being submitted by you.

Cookies

If you leave a comment/review on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

We also use cookies to collect data through our analytics and advertising services. These cookies allow Google Analytics to remember your preferences, track your activity on our site, and provide insights about your visits. Google AdSense cookies help us show you ads that are relevant to your interests.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email. We use Google reCAPTCHA for spam protection. Their privacy policy can be found here: https://policies.google.com/privacy?hl=en

We use Google Analytics and Google AdSense to collect various types of data about users who visit our site, including browsing history, device information, and demographic information. This data helps us improve our website, personalize content, and provide better advertising experiences.

You can opt-out of data collection by Google Analytics and Google AdSense at any time by adjusting your browser settings or using Google’s opt-out tools.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment/review, the comment/review and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Information submitted through the submission form is kept until an entry has been created based on it and/or it is no longer needed. This information will not be shared with anyone else.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments/reviews, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments/reviews may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

We do not sell user data to third-party providers. However, we may share data with third-party service providers to help us operate our website, improve our services, or comply with legal obligations.

Changes to Privacy Policy

We reserve the right to update our privacy policy at any time without prior notice. Any changes to our policy will be posted on this page. By continuing to use our site, you agree to any changes in our policy.
